Welcome back to our picks of magical film and TV fireplaces! If you haven’t already, check out part one to this blog, in which we covered some interesting entries from the likes of Disney and Harry Potter. As for part two, we thought it might be more fun to take a look at some more obscure film and TV fireplaces that may be not as famous, but most certainly just as magical.
Doctor Who
We briefly mentioned this in part one so what better time to highlight it than now. In ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’, the doctor and friends find themselves completely perplexed when they find an eighteenth century fireplace on a spaceship! Upon further investigation, the time travelling trio find that the fireplaces serves as a time window into the life of Madame De Pompadour and that it’s being used by murderous androids to stalk her. While that sounds awful, we’re just glad they picked such a stunning fireplace to display in their ship! Who said a killer robot run entirely by clocks couldn’t have class?
Spawn
Now we’ve hit obscure. This little known adaptation of the little known comic book is incredibly under-rated, probably because it was made in the 1990’s- not a great time for comic book movies. Anyway, that’s beside the point, we were talking fireplaces. Well here, the fireplace isn’t exactly magical…more ominous than anything else. It serves as a gateway to the birth place of the title hero which just so happens to be the eighth circle of hell. And we thought the worse a fireplace could do was burn us; little did we know they were in league with the Devil himself! Cheeky things!
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
How could the scenario of being tied to a chair while the room you’re in slowly burns around you get any worse? Well maybe when you hop over to the fireplace for safety and find it’s a trap door that leads to a secret Nazi operations room. ‘Our situation has not improved’ we hear Henry senior say but as this is an Indiana Jones film, we know Indie will find a way to escape completely unscathed, and he does! With help of the fireplace no less…obviously it was feeling guilty over its actions in ‘Spawn’.
